The opportunity is to contribute to the growth of an entrepreneurial Indigenous business centred in the Marine sector. The Senior Accountant is a new role that supports the achievement of business goals through provision of timely and accurate reporting, implementation and performance of controls, and expedient performance of transactional activity.

The role reports into Horizon Maritime’s accounting team, specifically the Financial Business Manager responsible for Joint Ventures, and has direct responsibilities to Miawpukek Horizon business leaders.

The role will be responsible to support business leaders with analytical support for operations and commercial activity, timely and professional billings to clients, and project cost control to enable timely, accurate funding of projects through claims mechanisms resulting from government grants for innovation projects.

Support for full-cycle accounting will require the individual to be involved in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports (ASPE), audit support, as well as preparation of transactional activity required to achieve timely and accurate financial close.

 

Core Responsibilities

  • Commercial Support:
    • Client invoicing under the direction of commercial leads following the Horizon Maritime accounting policy
    • Project cost tracking and support for the claims processes for government grants
    • Cost and break-even analyses for commercial bids
  • Accounting Duties:
    • Preparation of monthly and quarterly financial statement reports for review by JV Finance Manager and Managing Director, including variance analysis and commentary
    • Preparing and posting month end accruals, prepaids, and other journal entries to ensure accuracy of monthly reporting and ensuring auditable supporting schedules are maintained
    • Support Accounts Payable processes including vendor management
    • Preparation of bank and credit card reconciliations
    • Reconciling accounts as-needed to provide accurate monthly statements
    • Support for external financial audits and reviews
    • Assisting with implementation and management of internal controls with respect to financial policies, processes, and procedures, to ensure that activities and processes are in accordance with established legal, regulatory, and company policies and procedures
    • Providing assistance with new systems selection and implementation as required
    • Work with the Horizon Finance Team to improve internal operating efficiency
    • Preparation of annual budget with support from JV Finance Manager
    • Reforecasting of current year financials and/or project-specific reforecasts
    • Preparation of board materials and related ad-hoc requests
    • Preparation of bi-weekly cash reforesting and cash management

 

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate will have a CPA designation and 2-5 years’ experience in an accounting role. Candidates with equivalent experience and relevant education will be considered
  • Experience in full-cycle accounting, financial reporting, or customer billings is preferred, but not required
  • Proficient communication, interpersonal and organizational skills are vital to the role
  • High level of attention to detail in all areas of work
  • Able to work efficiently as a part of a team as well as independently
  • Able to work well under pressure, prioritize, and meet set deadlines
  • Ability to interpret and implement company policies and procedures
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make the necessary decisions to move forward the work at hand
  • High level of critical and logical thinking, analysis, and/or reasoning to identify underlying principles, reasons or facts
  • Strong project management skills, and the ability to produce quality work within tight timeframes
  • Experience assisting with audits performed by external audit firms would be an asset
  • Knowledge of MS Office, particularly Excel
  • Ability to adapt to and learn new software

 

This position is a full-time permanent role and will be based in-office Monday to Friday from 8:30-4:30 daily, with some option for flexible/hybrid work. We offer a competitive salary and benefits package which includes free on-site parking downtown.
