Horizon Maritime donates $250,000 to Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation creating Provincial Mi’kmaq Learners Healthcare Bursary Program at NSCC

Dartmouth, NS – June 18, 2024 – Today, at the Dartmouth General Hospital (DGH) the Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation announced a $250,000 gift from Horizon Maritime to further healthcare education opportunities for Mi’kmaq communities in Nova Scotia. The gift is supporting the DGHF-Horizon Maritime Mi’kmaq Learners Healthcare Bursary at Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC), designed to empower Mi’kmaq students in Nova Scotia pursuing a post-secondary education in healthcare.

This initiative aims to provide financial assistance through cost of living bursaries to support Mi’kmaq learners, enabling them to pursue rewarding careers in healthcare.

The key highlights of the bursary program include:

  • Five $3,000 bursaries annually, available to students from each of the five Mi’kmaq territory districts in Nova Scotia: Kespukwitk, Sipekne’katik, Eskikewa’kik, Unama’kik, and Aqq Piktuk
  • Renewable bursaries for up to three years, ensuring sustained support throughout the duration of their education
  • An application process facilitated through the NSCC awards office, ensuring a streamlined and equitable selection process

Dartmouth General Hospital and Horizon Maritime share a common vision in building diversity and inclusion within the healthcare sector. By investing in the education and professional development of Mi’kmaq learners, Horizon Maritime is actively contributing to the creation of a more representative and inclusive healthcare workforce in Nova Scotia.

“Horizon Maritime is very pleased to contribute to the vital work that the Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation does by supporting the Mi’kmaq Learners Healthcare Bursary Program.  Horizon’s ability to make this commitment to this very important program is a direct result of dedicated personnel who have worked so hard to make Horizon Maritime a success. The opportunity to provide Mi’kmaq students financial support while they pursue a career in the Health Care Sector is one that we could not pass up. At the end of the day all Nova Scotians will benefit from this program and Horizon is very pleased to play a part in this.” – Steve Widmeyer, CEO, Horizon Maritime

“As a College with an access mandate, we know just how vital student awards are to our students. Having that opportunity for financial support can be the difference between attending NSCC and creating a bright future through post-secondary education or not having the chance to chase those dreams. This gift will indeed make that difference for Mi’kmaq learners pursuing a career in healthcare for years to come and we are so grateful to Horizon Maritime for their generosity.” – Don Bureaux, President, NSCC

“Thank you to Horizon Maritime for taking the lead with this incredible gift. The Dartmouth General Hospital is a healthcare leader in equity and diversity practices and the DGH Foundation is proud to champion this bursary program to help ensure healthcare professionals in the province reflect the diverse communities we serve.” – Stephen Harding, CEO, Dartmouth General Hospital Foundation
